The Nursing Continuing Professional Development and Entrepreneurial Enterprise Department promotes the education, research, and practice service goals of the School of Nursing through nursing continuing professional development for registered nurses and special projects focused on community needs, and the promotion of faculty practice and service activities. Special projects, funded through corporate sponsorship, provide opportunities for faculty to improve patient/client care, promote professional dialogue between education and service, and demonstrate clinical excellence.

Nursing Continuing Professional Development

Nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) is an integral part of the mission of the Louisiana State University Health New Orleans School of Nursing (LSUHNO-SON). The philosophy of the School of Nursing supports the concept of continued learning through a commitment to provide instruction and service for Louisiana nurses. The changing roles and functions of the nurse within the health care system mandate the need for continuing education and professional development to maintain currency in practice. The LSUHNO Nursing Continuing Professional Development Program is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

American Heart Association Training

The LSUHNO-SON Department of Nursing Continuing Professional Development & Entrepreneurial Enterprise is an official Training Site (TS) for American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care training (ECC). The LSUHNO SON Training Site is affiliated with the Tulane Simulation Center Training Center.  Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider and Instructor courses are offered.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS HCP):  The goal of the Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Course is to train participants to save lives of victims of cardiac arrest through high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The American Heart Association designed the BLS for Healthcare Providers course to prepare healthcare professionals to perform CPR in both in-and out-of-hospital settings. This course trains participants to promptly recognize cardiac arrest, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations, and provide early use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), as part of a team and individually.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS):  The goal of the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider Course is to improve outcomes for adult patients with cardiac arrest and other cardiopulmonary emergencies through provider training. The ACLS Provider course is designed for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. Through didactic instruction and active participation in simulated cases, the students will enhance skills and clinical decision-making abilities for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiopulmonary arrest, acute arrhythmia, stroke, and acute coronary syndromes.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS):  The goal of the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course is to improve the quality of care to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes. In the PALS course, the student will reinforce and enhance their skills in the treatment of pediatric arrest and periarrest patients through active participation in a series of simulated pediatric emergencies. These simulations are designed to reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, and effective team resuscitation dynamics.

RN Refresher Course

Registered Nurse Refresher Program (RNRP) Description:

The RNRP is designed to address the learning needs and skills development of the registered nurse (RN) who wishes to return to clinical practice or apply for relicensure. It is a service provided by the Louisiana State University Health New Orleans School of Nursing (LSUHNO-SON).

RNRP is congruent with the philosophy of the LSUHNO School of Nursing. This learning opportunity is a planned and organized experience, which will augment knowledge, skills and attitudes in preparation for the learner to return to the practice of nursing. Faculty will act as facilitators in the program and focus in identifying media and content while the learner is responsible for his/her own learning. This means the learner will actively participate in establishing specific goals and learning methods as well as be self-directed in scheduling appointments and adhering to timelines.
