NURS 3451 - GENETIC HEALTH ACROSS THE LIFESPAN[3 Credits] This course builds on knowledge gained in basic sciences and Pathophysiology, and focuses on application of genetic principles that influence health and disease across the life span. Content will center on the basic mechanisms of genetic inheritance and gene-environment interactions that influence common and complex disorders and nursing’s role in genetic health care as identified in the Genetic Health Care standards set by the International Society of Nurses in Genetics. The impact of genetics and the Human Genome Project on health promotion, disease prevention, and nursing interventions will be examined. Students are expected to critically examine the social, ethical, legal, cultural, political, and professional implications of the integration of genetics into health care and be able to apply genetic health information to predict and reduce the risk of disease. Prerequisite: NURS 3351, 3362, 3372, 3366, and 3356
