DENT 4168 - Baton Rouge Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Selective

This selective rotation in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center (OLORMC) in Baton Rouge provides dental students with a unique opportunity to gain valuable practical experience and knowledge in this specialized field. During their time here, students will be exposed to comprehensive OMS in a Level 1 trauma center, including extractions, removal of impacted and broken-down teeth, biopsies, head and neck oncology, microvascular reconstruction, and orthognathic surgery. Additionally, they will become familiar with the diagnosis and management of temporomandibular joint disorders, facial pain, pre- and post-operative care, anesthesia and sedation, and ethical and legal considerations. This rotation offers numerous benefits, such as hands-on experience, development of clinical skills, exposure to interdisciplinary care, and understanding of pre- and post-operative planning.
