NURS 3451 - GENETIC HEALTH ACROSS THE LIFESPAN

[3 Credits]
This course builds on the knowledge gained in social sciences, humanities, and pathophysiology and focuses on applying genetic principles that influence health and disease across the lifespan. The content will focus on the fundamental mechanisms of gene inheritance and gene-environment interactions that influence common and complex disorders, as well as nursing’s role in genetic health, as outlined in the Scope and Standards of Genetics Clinical Nursing Practice established by the International Society of Nurses in Genetics (ISONG). The impact of genetics and the Human Genome Project on health promotion, illness prevention, disease management, and nursing interventions will be examined. Students are expected to critically examine the social, ethical, legal, cultural, political, and professional implications of integrating genetics into healthcare and be able to apply genetic health information to predict and reduce the risk of disease. Prerequisite: NURS 3351, 3362, 3372, 3366, and 3356.
