MCLIN 201 - Science and Practice of Medicine[114 Hours] This interdisciplinary course continues the clinical education of medical students. Like the SPM 100 course, it has three components: computer-based cases, small group clinical forums, and the Clinical Skills Laboratory. Computer-based case discussions in the second year place greater emphasis on the pathophysiology of disease and patient management. The small group clinical forums focus on population medicine, public health, disease prevention and wellness, healthcare policy, epidemiology, biostatistics and medical informatics. Basic principles of these disciplines are taught in a series of lectures. Students meet in small groups to discuss and research questions pertinent to problem areas in public health (e.g. immunization, screening, substance abuse, diet and obesity, sexually transmitted diseases etc.). The Clinical Skills Laboratory sessions for second year students include such things as catheterization, insertion of IV lines, intubation, arrhythmia recognition and management, and lumbar puncture.
