ORTHO 5211 - BIOMECHANICS[1 Credit] The purpose of this course is to give the first year students an introduction to the principles and applications used in treating patients with standard edgewise appliances (0? torque, 0? tip, and 0? rotation). Basic concepts of orthodontic mechanics are covered in this course in an effort to give the student the foundation to draw upon for the diagnosing, treatment planning, and treatment of cases. The course is taught in conjunction with the Advanced Orthodontic Technique course (Ortho 5202) in which the first year students “treat” cases on orthodontic typodonts. The Advanced Orthodontic Technique course familiarizes the students with the appliances, instruments, and hand skills that will be used during the treatment of orthodontic patients in the LSU Postgraduate Orthodontic Clinic.
