NURS 3356 - MENTAL HEALTH NURSING THEORY

[3 Credits]
Students build on knowledge gained in the social sciences, basic sciences, Abnormal Psychology, Pharmacology, Health Assessment and Foundations of Nursing Practice. In this didactic course, students learn the theories, concepts, and skills necessary to provide nursing care to patients and families of diverse backgrounds who are coping with mental health issues. At the completion of this course students will utilize knowledge to apply the nursing process to assist patients and families with health promotion, disease prevention, and illness management according to ANA Standards of Practice. Presentation, small group discussion, and case studies are used to help students incorporate the core values of caring, professionalism, respect, integrity, diversity, and excellence and the skills of communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and coordination into nursing care planning in the didactic setting.
