General Practice Residency

Comprehensive Dentistry (General Practice Residency)

The General Practice Residency Program at Louisiana State University School of Dentistry is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association. This one-year (optional second year) residency program offers an opportunity for advanced comprehensive clinical experience in a hospital setting, with additional training in the sciences basic to dental practice. The program is structured in such a manner as to take advantage of the strong features of both the sequential and integrated training programs. The ultimate objective is to train dentists to function as part of the hospital team rendering total patient care.

The primary teaching hospitals are University Medical Center at New Orleans (UMC) and Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center (OLOL) in Baton Rouge; other affiliated teaching institutions include the Louisiana State University Schools of Dentistry and Medicine; and Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (VA Hospital) in New Orleans and in Baton Rouge.

The general dentistry resident is thoroughly indoctrinated in hospital organization, protocol and administration, and is trained to care for patients on both an in-patient and out-patient basis. The program prepares the resident for private practice with hospital privileges or for an academic career in Hospital Dentistry.

Off-service rotations are scheduled through departments of Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine (medical emergency and trauma), and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.  In the dental component, rotations are designed to give patient experiences in dentistry for the HIV(+)/infectious disease, dentistry for the special needs population of both Geriatrics and Neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual disabilities, and elective rotations intended to provide the resident with ample training under specialists’ supervision. This specialty concept is carried over into the general dentistry segment, where the resident broadens his/her experience in the various dental disciplines. The General Dentistry faculty is augmented by specialists in Endodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics.

Successful applicants for this program begin the academic year on July 1 and conclude June 30.  A General Dentistry Residency Certificate is awarded to each resident who successfully completes the one-year program. Those completing the optional second year will receive a certificate for both years at the completion of the second year. A moderate sedation certificate is awarded to residents, upon passing the pain control and sedation course GDENT5504 at completion of the entire program (one or two years).

Participation in the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) program and the National Match Service are required to apply for this program.  Additional application items include: a 2x2” photo, Pre-Dental/college and dental school transcripts, NBDE/INDBE score and a $50.00 non-refundable application processing fee.  All graduation requirements of a resident’s dental school and successful completion of NBDE/INBDE must be met by May 31 or they may be dropped from the program.  Any exceptions must be approved by the GPR Program Director.

The annual stipend for first year residents is $57,706.00 and $59,640.00 for those continuing with the optional second year. Beginning January 1, 2024, the annual stipends will be increased to $60,241.00 for first year residents and $62,222.00 for second year residents.  Each appointment is for twelve months beginning July 1st, and an annual contract and hire packet are sent after notification of acceptance.
