Nicolas G. Bazan, MD, PhD
Professor and Director, Neuroscience Center of Excellence

Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Graduate education is based at the LSU Neuroscience Center of Excellence, a multi disciplinary center. The Neuroscience Center fosters interactions and collaborations among neuroscientists, creating a rich and stimulating environment for graduate education. As part of the PhD program in Biomedical Sciences at LSUHSC, the LSU Neuroscience Center of Excellence provides research training in fundamental neuroscience techniques and discovery. During the first year, students complete foundational coursework in Biomedical Sciences and participate in research rotations through laboratories of their choice, which aids in the selection of a mentor and research project for their dissertation. In the second year, students select a mentor and take advanced-level courses relevant to their area of research. The breadth of the faculty’s research programs encompasses all major areas of neuroscience. Training is designed to provide students with a broad, general knowledge of neuroscience along with more intensive training in a highly specialized topic for academic and/or industrial research or teaching positions.
