Biomedical Sciences, PhD

Dr. Tiffany Wills & Dr. Diptasri Mandal
Program Directors

The PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences was designed in 2024 to provide an integrated, contemporary learning experience for doctoral students in preparation for careers in the biomedical sciences. The program is supported by the expertise of the graduate faculty in the basic sciences at LSUHSC-New Orleans. The first-year curriculum provides foundational, interdisciplinary coursework in the basic science areas of biochemistry, genetics, microbiology & immunology, physiology, pharmacology and neuroscience. This curriculum prepares students for research projects with graduate faculty members in a wide-range of research disciplines. Four laboratory rotations are selected over the first year to guide the selection of a major professor that will oversee dissertation work that begins in the second year. Students, in consultation with their major professor and program advisor, select advanced-topic elective course work that aligns to their research concentration, participate in seminar and journal club courses, and engage in professional development activities to enhance oral and written communication skills. The PhD curriculum can be tailored to the needs of each student. It is expected that a period of 4-5 years will be devoted to full time study to complete degree requirements, dissertation research, and the final defense examination. The minimum (core) requirements for this degree can be found at the link below.
