Pediatric Dentistry MSD


The Program in Pediatric Dentistry is university-based and balanced with significant hospital and extramural affiliation with Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. The program is designed to prepare highly qualified specialists for the clinical practice of pediatric dentistry or careers in teaching or research. The twenty-four month course of study includes (1) seminars in clinically oriented basic sciences, (2) instruction in advanced clinical procedures, including minor tooth movement, (3) training in hospital procedure, including general anesthesia, (4) experiences in providing comprehensive dental health for handicapped children, (5) courses in research methodology and biomedical sciences applicable to health care in children. A research project is required for a Masters of Science in Dentistry Degree.

The program has been planned in accordance with the standards for the Commission on Dental Accreditation Advanced Specialty Education Programs in Pediatric Dentistry and is accredited by the American Dental Association, Commission on Dental Accreditation. Upon completion of the program, the postgraduate student receives a certificate in pediatric dentistry and meets eligibility requirements for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination, and receive a Masters of Science in Dentistry Degree.

Four applicants are selected each year. Applicants should be graduates in the upper half of their class and are encouraged to take the Graduate Record Examination. Completed American Dental Education Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) applications must be received by October 1 of the year preceding matriculation.
